It's August now and pretty soon the kids will be heading back to school and the sweatshirts will be pulled out of the drawer...
When you look back on your summer, what did you do that really allowed you to relax and fulfill your soul? If you're like most people, I'm sure your days were filled with grad parties, mowing the lawn, Cedar Point, playing taxi driver a million times over, summer camps, vacations that you needed a vacation from, late nights, summer events, working...
It was fun! But it was busy!
At Coastal Cleveland, we believe the best days in life are the ones spent doing simple things. These quiet, little acts allow us to experience peace, calm and rejuvenation.
Before the month is over, I encourage you to try this "Simple Summer Bucket List" and try to enjoy the simple things in life that sit before you each day.
Put your phone down...in fact, try not to take it with you. Challenge yourself to be present in each moment.
1. FIND WATER
Whether it is the lake, the ocean, a baby pool or a stream...find water and go to it. Spend at least 30 minutes here. Dip your toes, paint a picture of it, watch the waves, journal here...whatever you choose...just go to the water. Just be.
2. COLLECT NATURE
Find something to search for and collect your favorites in a jar. Seashells, driftwood, beach glass, rocks...sitting and collecting is such a calming act.
3. TRY AN OUTDOOR YOGA CLASS
Stretch, breathe, meditate and be free.
4. MAKE SUN TEA
Choose one day to make sun tea outside. On this same day, visit a local market and purchase some local produce and goods. Make a light summer supper with local fare, your fresh brewed sun tea and enjoy it outdoors.
Pick a time early in the morning or early in the evening to walk. Try to find a new place if you can. Drive to a neighboring community, park and walk. It's fun to see the houses and neighborhoods in a new way. Or find a place in nature where you can hike.
6. FIND A COMMUNITY CONCERT
Take your lawn chair to a community park or beach and listen to the music. Try to just sit and listen.
7. SLEEP OUTSIDE
Whether you are in a hammock, on a blanket at the beach, a porch swing, the back of your boat, a tent...find one time to nap outdoors. The experience is hard to match.
8. BUILD A FIRE
Gather your family (big or small) and sit around a fire. Make sure there are no phones outside with you. Talk - Catch up - Just be together.
9. DO SOMETHING CREATIVE
Get outside and let your inner artist have a little bit of your time. Photograph nature, draw on the ground with sidewalk chalk, paint a picture of your garden, stack rock sculptures along the creek, build a sand castle...just create!
10. WATCH A SUNSET
Head to the best place in your community to sit and watch the sun set over the horizon.
11. PAMPER YOURSELF
Get a massage or a pedicure or look for a holistic spa near you to experience something new! YOU ARE WORTH IT!
Read one book or magazine. Sit and read. No interruptions.
13. MAKE A MESS...JUST DO IT
Dig in the dirt or create something, not worrying about the mess you’re making.
14. WATCH THE WORLD WAKE UP
Grab your morning coffee, tea or smoothie and sit on the front porch to watch the world wake up around you. The people driving to work, the birds, the dog walkers, the children, the squirrels...take some time to see what happens outside each morning. Give gratitude for a new day.
15. RENT A KAYAK OR PADDLEBOARD
Go at your own pace, float and just be with the water.
Get in the pool or lake or ocean and swim. Get under the water, get your hair wet and feel the motion of your body lightly moving through the water. Let your mind and body be free!
17. WATCH LIGHTNING BUGS
Sit outside and enjoy the glow of the lightning bugs in the summer sky.
18. LAY ON A BLANKET OUTSIDE
So simple, yet so relaxing. Find a spot in the sun or shade and just lay down. Listen to the sounds of nature, feel the breezes of the wind or the heat of the sun and just be. Take deep breaths and let your mind relax.
19. TAKE AN AFTERNOON NAP
We insist our kids did it, why can’t we? Have a guilt-free siesta.
20. SPEND TIME WITH A CHILD
See the world through their eyes, and be captivated by the smallest detail the world has to offer.
